Graduate Scholarship

A. OBJECTIVES

  • To attract the interest of MALAYSIAN and INTERNATIONAL candidates to pursue postgraduate studies by research mode at USM, by funding their FIRST & SECOND SEMESTER tuition fees.
  • To strengthen the research excellence agenda and increase the number of publications in USM by increasing the enrollment of research mode postgraduate students.

B. REQUIREMENTS

  • Open to research mode full-time basis only.
  • Candidates who has received full admission offer letter from USM for studying Masters or Ph.D by research mode, yet to register as a FULL-TIME student is eligible to apply. Application for part time students would NOT be considered.
  • Open to all Malaysians (Masters and Ph.D) and International candidates (Ph.D) only.
  • Minimum CGPA 3.33 out of 4.00 or equivalent (for Bachelor and/or Masters degree by Coursework/Mixed mode) or Pass the Masters degree by research.
  • Publication preference (to enrol into Masters) and publication requirement (to enrol into Ph.D) in a journal indexed by WoS/SCOPUS/ERA.
  • Fast track PhD candidates may be exempted.
  • The awardee needs to apply for the extension before the second semester starts. The decision on the extension will be based on the awardee's research progress, including the SUBMISSION of at least ONE (1) manuscript to a journal indexed by WoS (Q1 or Q2) , where the awardee must be the first student author and the supervisor must be one of the authors listed.
  • The main supervisor must have:
    a) at least ONE(1) active (the active duration of the grant must still haveat least 1 year from the date of application) and sufficient research grant as Principal Investigator to support the candidate research throughout the candidature duration; OR
    b) at least TWO(2) publications in journals indexed by WoS/SCOPUS/ERA as Corresponding Author for the previous year (2025).

Graduate Horizon Scholarship
  1. The Graduate Horizon Scholarship (GHS) is a research attachment programme designed to support postgraduate students in undertaking research activities at a collaborating institution. The programme facilitates access to specialised facilities, resources, and expertise that complement and strengthen the students' current research studies.

  3. Term and Conditions:
    • The applicant must be a registered full-time active research-mode student (Master's or PhD) at USM.
    • The collaborator's institution must be an institution ranked within the Top 100 of the QS World University Rankings or an industry partner a multinational corporation (MNC) abroad.
    • The research attachment must be conducted at an institution that has an active MOU/MOA with USM.
    • The duration of this financial support is ONE (1) to THREE (3) month(s).
    • The applicant must have an official invitation letter (the student name) from the intended institution where the attachment will be commenced.
    • Upon completion of the attachment, the student is required to provide the publication(s) in an indexed journal, which is co-authored by the host researcher(s) within one year as proof of the output for the attachment.
    • The maximum funding provided under this financial support is RM 5,000.00.
